Niggle or Injury? How to Know When to Push Through (And When to See a Physio)
Winter sport season has landed! Whether you're hitting the footy field, netball court, or soccer pitch, your body’s in for a ride. First few games of the season? Expect some sore muscles and general fatigue.
But what if that soreness doesn’t go away? Or feels... not quite right?
Let’s talk about
niggles—those pesky little warning signs your body gives you before a proper injury sets in.
What Is a Niggle?
A niggle is a minor pain, tightness or discomfort that you might feel during or after sport. You can usually keep playing through it, but here’s the kicker: ignoring it can lead to something more serious.
Research from Matt Whalan and colleagues shows that athletes who experience a niggle are 3.6 to 6.9 times more likely to suffer a time-loss injury. That’s a stat worth paying attention to.
Should You Push Through a Niggle?
We’re not saying every tight calf or sore hip means you should stop playing immediately. But if something isn’t settling down, don’t just tough it out.
Here’s how to manage niggles smartly and stay injury-free this season:
1. Keep Checking In With Your Body
That sore knee from the game? Keep an eye on it. Is it better the next morning? Or worse after your next training? If it’s not improving, it’s time to book in with one of our sports physiotherapists or podiatrists to get it assessed.
2. Manage Your Training Load
Got school cross country during the week, then a Saturday netball game, followed by Sunday soccer? That’s a lot of stress on the body—especially if you’re carrying a niggle.
Try scaling back where you can. Prioritise what matters and let your body recover.
3. Don’t Forget the Basics
Recovery is not cryotherapy chambers and recovery boots! Focus on what works:
- Get a good night’s
sleep
- Eat enough
nutritious food
- Stay
hydrated
These are the real MVPs of sports injury prevention.
4. When in Doubt, Get It Checked Out
Still unsure if it’s a niggle or an actual injury? That’s what we’re here for. Our team at Life Performance Health can assess, treat, and guide you back to sport safely.
Why Early Intervention Matters
The sooner you get on top of a niggle, the less likely it is to become a full-blown injury. Whether you're a weekend warrior, junior athlete, or part of a competitive team, listening to your body is key to staying in the game.
