What does the modern-day billionaire ‘Space Race” have in common with fixing your sore knee?
Trailblazers like Jeff Bezos with his company Blue Origin and Elon Musk’s Spacex , are creating a
modern rivalry that may one day see intergalactic travel become accessible to the common person.
The one problem...
NASA has funded a body of research over decades looking at the effect of anti-gravity conditions on
human tissues.
A famous series of studies, termed the Berlin Bed Rest Study (1) Has evaluated the effect of complete
rest on body tissues:
The outcome:
Is resting your injury, counterproductive?
I invite you to recall a time when you were injured for a lengthy period
Back pain that persisted for months
Knee pain that lingered for the season
What did a 3- week period of rest do for your injury?
In most cases , you will feel fantastic during the rest period but as you resume the
provocative activity...
Current practices around low back pain share a similar narrative – Stay active, Avoid rest!
As physios, we prefer the term ‘Relative rest’
Relative rest is used to reduce exposure toward provocative activities, while maintaining
activity in other areas.
For example: You have front of knee pain playing basketball.
Relative rest is encouraged from jumping and sprinting.
But action is promoted for slow strength exercises, core and upper body workouts and cross
training.
When the time is right, we incrementally start to expose the knee toward jumping and
faster running.
So the next time you have that nagging injury and feel compelled to rest it for weeks on end,
Ask yourself, Is rest the best?
